"The first volume in Stephen Merlino's 'The Unseen Moon' series, The Jack of Souls is a terrific read from beginning to end and clearly establishes Merlino as a master of the fantasy action/adventure genre. Highly recommended for community library Science Fiction & Fantasy collections..."

"This is a book where characters are on a clock and the stakes are high. Comparisons could easily be drawn with the works of Tolkien or Martin... Merlino weaves a tale of swords and sorcery that somehow finds new ways to take readers down the well-worn path of fantasy literature. Tolkien’s influence can be found in the beautifully described environments of the story and the depth of the cast of well-developed characters. The comparison to Martin is mostly drawn because the Tale of Fire and Ice series is often acclaimed for its interpretation of real-world, human stories through the lens of fantasy."

In the tradition of the Shannara Chronicles and the Witcher series A Rogue & Knight Adventure

Harric, an outcast rogue, must break a curse on his fate or die by his nineteenth birthday. As the day approaches, nightmares from the spirit world stalk him and tear at his sanity. To survive, he’ll need more than his usual tricks. He’ll need help—and a lot of it—but on the kingdom’s lawless frontier, his only allies are other outcasts.

One of these is Caris, a mysterious, horse-whispering runaway, intent upon becoming one of the Queen’s first female knights. The other is Sir Willard—ex-immortal, ex-champion, now addicted to pain-killing herbs and banished from the court.

With their help, Harric might keep his curse at bay. But for how long?

And both companions bring perils and secrets of their own Caris bears the scars of a troubled past; Willard is at war with the Old Ones, an order of insane immortal knights who once enslaved the kingdom. The Old Ones have returned to murder Willard and seize the throne from his queen. Willard is on the run and on one final, desperate quest for his queen.

Together, Harric and his companions must overcome fanatical armies, murderous sorcerers, and powerful supernatural foes.

Alone, Harric must face the temptation of a forbidden magic that could break his curse, but cost him the only woman he’s ever loved.

The Jack of Souls A New Fantasy Adventure Series The Unseen Moon Book 1 edition by Stephen Merlino Children eBooks

Harric is a good guy.

He saves damsels in distress because it’s the right thing to do. (And also, he likes girls.)

He’s joined up with folks who are off to save the land from evil. (But he needed to get out of town quick anyway.)

He keeps in contact with his mother. (Unfortunately she’s dead and working hard to kill him too.)

He thinks carefully about making the right decisions. (Except for those highly questionable situations that he dives headlong into.)

And he works hard selling his wares. (While he fleeces unsuspecting persons out of any money he can.)

I always like a book with a good guy don’t you?

Would I recommend it?
This is far more than just a fantasy book with a good guy. It’s full of new worlds and magics, culture clashes and ideals, angry immortals and horses (it never hurts to have good horses)… it’s epic fantasy! I finished it, promptly took the book my husband was reading away and put this in his hands instead. If you’re a fantasy lover put this next on your list!

The Jack of Souls A New Fantasy Adventure Series The Unseen Moon Book 1 edition by Stephen Merlino Children eBooks Reviews

When I started this book I was rather sceptical. Some of it remained till the end of it. As long as the main character seems quite well-developed the remaining foreground one, that is he object of love of the MC, is irritating (and it is a euphemism). It is as single-dimensional as it is only possible and seems to belong to a completely different story. It is surprising as other persons of the book, even though lacking in dimensionality at times, are still full-fledged citizens of the book.
The world presented, divided by multiple aspects (culture, history, use of magic, race) is interesting. Existence of magic and higher beings is a nice touch. All in all - very interesting setting with high potential.
The plot, even though simple, has the ability to suck the reader in. Of course, the book ends with a cliff-hanger - how else )
Summarizing - worth reading, just please, kill the horse-touch girl before she kills the fun of reading the book with her stubborn simplicity.
Wow, wow, wow. I am absolutely shocked. I can't tell you how much I loved this book! Usually, I'm not so much a fan of the fantasy genre unless it's urban fantasy or magical realism, but I'll be darned if The Jack of Souls by author Stephen C. Merlino didn't blow me away!

You can find my full review of the book at Bitty Book Nook Book Reviews.

This novel is the first in the Unseen Moon series, and you'd better believe that I'm spending the $3.99 on to buy the second book! Ultimately, if you're a fan of the fantasy genre, or of coming-of-age stories, you HAVE to give The Jack of Souls a try! I'd bet my hat that you won't be disappointed!
While the storylines seem to take forever to converge, the various characters develop distinctly, and this makes for more nuanced interchanges and adds humor. The tension and mystery build, and although this book ends with a "minor" battle, there are more conflicts to resolve, enticing the reader to continue the series.

I appreciate that there are minimal errors; the book is very well edited. The writing is clean. The characters are unique. The plot is humorous, dark, weird, complex in its interweavings, and full of action/fighting. The romance is also tainted with weirdness/irony and humor.

I recommend this book to adult/more mature fantasy readers as the antagonist is brutal and vile; the character interactions are more adult in nature; thematic conflicts involve "drug" use/the use of dark magic/demonic powers; there is torture/violence; sexual abuse is implied; and there is a sprinkling of foul language.

In spite of these warnings, the story is sufficiently engaging for "mild" readers to enjoy the characters' misadventures.
Oh, my goodness! Stephen Merlino has created an entire new universe for us to go visit. The depth of vision and creativity here is just amazing -- all elements seem to be fully realized. The characters are very real. And there are some snippets of wry humor here and there, such as giving a terrifying monster the incongruous name "Missy." What's not to love? And, why not a full five stars?

As other reviewers have noted, some parts of the book move along veeerrryy sloooowly. The author dives down a rabbit hole every once in a while, chasing a side story, and apparently gets distracted by all the cool things found down there. So the reader may find themselves getting a tad impatient, willing the author to return to the main narrative. I find this distraction to be forgivable, others may not feel the same way. Still, the author could have cut some of these side adventures in half, and not hurt the quality of the book at all.

This is a great story. There is a mild cliff-hanger element to the ending, but not of the frustrating/aggravating we've-been-cheated sort. The narrative arc is complete, but we also know that our hero has more tasks that he must attend to.

Definitely recommended, as is Book 2.
so it was a little difficult to get into this book at first because of how different it was from almost anything else that I've read, lets face it when we read fantasy books we have a certain expectation (elves are elves dwarfs are dwarfs and orcs are jerks) this was not that. the people knew of magic and where distrusting and hostile, vaguely magical creatures were scorned and mocked (but didn't seem to be actively hunted.) they didn't seem to have other races but they had types of people that were made different in slightly folktale like ways (like if you drink purple wine during a blood moon while you are pregnant your child might end up being this type of abnormality.) this... differentness made it difficult to get into while at the same time it felt like a breath of fresh air to me.
